Tips For Firing Plates
Maximising Space When Firing Plates
Plates are not great to fire in any size kiln and you may or may not have access to plate cranks. Also, some customers say they don't have a budget to buy plate cranks.

DIY Plate Crank Alternative
Use a combination of props (we have used castellated props in the image above) and stilts to create a tiered plate-firing system. The overlap creates great heat and air circulation inside the kiln too.
Place one plate on the kiln shelf (dry-footed).
Balance the next plate on a small prop (with a stilt balanced on top of the prop). Place the plate on top of the stack.
If you have space, balance the next plate using a higher prop (stilted).
